LRI’s Digital Mammography system with Computer Aided Detection (CAD) raises the standard of breast care in our community and allows LRI physicians to detect and diagnose breast cancer earlier and more precisely. Digital Mammography provides a sharper (higher contrast) image compared to conventional mammograms.
Better visulalization of dense breast tissue and calcifications
Lower radiation dose
Shorter exam time
Less repositioning
Immediate results
Comfortable exam pads
High resolution breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsies

The American Cancer Society and the American College of Radiology, recommend annual screening mammography starting at age 40. If you have a strong family history of breast cancer (mother or sister), than screening should start at the age of 35 or younger.
How much radiation is involved?
Digital Mammography uses very low radiation to form images of the breast, much lower than conventional X-Rays or CT scans. Also, our digital mammography system use less radiation than conventional film/screen mammography.
What should I wear?
You will be asked to undress from the waist up for the exam. We provide a gown to cover up. Comfortable clothing is appropriate. Do not apply deodorant the morning of your mammogram as the residue may show on the digital mammogram.
What preparation is needed?
Prior films are requested to compare with your current digital mammogram at LRI. This is very helpful in determining if the pattern of breast tissue has changed over time.
How long will it take?
The exam will take less than 15 minutes. Patients appreciate the immediate results from one of LRI’s board certified radiologist. LRI’s radiologists are dedicated to patient care, which is why they personally consult with the patient if they note areas of concern or further evaluation is needed.
What are the advantages of digital mammography?
A recent large multi-center study called DMIST showed that digital mammograms are superior in younger patients and patients with dense breasts, and women that are under the age of 50. Digital mammography is more sensitive for detecting breast cancer in these age groups.
Digital mammography also has other advantages. Digital mammograms have a lower radiation dose to the breast, compared to film/screen mammography. In addition, this imaging technique has reduced image artifacts. Because of the digital acquisition and processing, digital mammography allows for fewer repeat images. The computer acquisition and processing also leads to a faster, high quality examination for the patient.
